My name is Joe. I’m usually quiet around people and only talk when someone talks to me first. Not because I have anything against people, I just never know what to say, so I let my brain do all the talking instead. Half the time, I’m not even paying attention because I’m busy thinking about something completely unrelated. What’s funny is that my art is nothing like me. My drawings are more adventurous, more curious, and probably better at expressing themselves than I am. They get to explore different ideas while I struggle to come up with a reply when someone asks me how my day is going. I guess I put more personality into my drawings than I do into actual conversations. At least something around here knows how to speak.

Sometimes I like to perform, too. It can feel just as constraining as having a conversation, but at least there’s something to do with my body. I don’t have to keep searching for the right words or pretend to be interested in the weather. I can just move and see what happens. When I’m not doing that, I like taking random videos of things that catch my attention. Usually, they’re things that don’t seem particularly important or have any obvious reason to be recorded. I like things that don’t ask for much, things that are easy to overlook. There’s something interesting about looking at an ordinary object or a passing moment without needing to know what it means. You start noticing details, and whatever the thing lacks, your mind fills in. Maybe you see something familiar in it, or maybe you make up a feeling that wasn’t there before. The object itself hasn’t changed, but somehow, your experience of it has. I think that’s beautiful, in a simple way. Not everything needs to be useful or have a clear explanation to be worth paying attention to. I don’t always know why certain things interest me, and I don’t think I need to. Maybe that’s what connects my drawings and little videos. They’re all ways of spending time with things without having to explain myself too much. I can be quiet in a room and still have plenty going on. It just doesn’t always come out in conversation. Sometimes it comes out as a drawing, a movement, or a thirty-second video of something nobody else would think to record. I suppose I’m not that good at talking about the world, but I do like looking at it.
